Barrett G. Haik, MD, FACS

A native of New Orleans, Dr. Haik received his undergraduate degree from Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, and his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. In addition, Dr. Haik earned a Master of Science degree in Anatomy at Louisiana State University. He served his internship at the Charity Hospital of Louisiana and his residency at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.

He next joined the faculty of Cornell University Medical College in New York, where he rose from Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology in 1980 to Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology in 1984. He was also Associate Director of the Ophthalmic Oncology Service at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York from 1984 to 1986.

In 1986, Dr. Haik moved to Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans as Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Ophthalmic Oncology and Orbital Disease Service. During his tenure at Tulane, Dr. Haik served as the Residency Program Director from 1988 to 1992 and as Medical Director of the Ophthalmology Clinics at the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital. In 1990, he received a joint appointment as Clinical Professor of Pediatrics. In 1991, Dr. Haik was named the George M. Haik, Sr., M.D. - St. Giles Foundation Professor of Pediatric and Adult Ophthalmic Oncology, the first endowed Chair in Ophthalmology at Tulane. 

At the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, under Dr. Haik's leadership and the generosity of our wonderful donors, the Department of Ophthamology has been transformed from a department with fewer than ten academic faculty members into the widely acclaimed Hamilton Eye Institute, home to over 40 academic faculty members, world-class facilities, and lauded as one of the top ten clinical care facilities in the United States. 

Dr. Haik is a member of numerous prestigious medical and scientific societies. He is President of the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (for which he recently completed a 3-year term on the Board of Regents), the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the New York Academy of Medicine, as well as a member of the American Ophthalmological Society. He has served as President of the American Eye Study Club and the American Society of Ophthalmic Ultrasound and as officer and committee chairman for many medical and ophthalmologic professional societies and organizations, such as the Foundation Fighting Blindness, American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Southern Medical Association and the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition, he serves on the Boards of Directors of the Eye Foundation of America, the Foundation for the Facially Disfigured, and the Isaac Stauffer Memorial Clinic.

Dr. Haik has authored or co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and abstracts. He is internationally renowned as an expert in the diagnosis and management of ophthalmic tumors and has received a number of grants for his research, which has centered on the evaluation of diagnostic imaging techniques and interactive computer technology and education. An accomplished and enlightening educator, Dr. Haik has given innumerable presentations in both national and international forums, and received an Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Haik and his wife, Mary Bain Haik, have two children, Barrett and Claire.
